Since we are focused on L-O-V-E this month, let’s spend a little time to focus on God’s love for us. In a way, we celebrated an unbelievably awesome Valentine from God on Christmas, when we celebrated the birth of Jesus. In 1 John 4, we read that “God is love” and “God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.”
God’s love for us is often described as unfailing and everlasting. This is nearly incomprehensible by our human hearts and minds. First of all, what, in our human experience, is unfailing and everlasting? Secondly, if we think about what we have done and what we have not done in our life, how is it that God continues to love us? The answer, thankfully, is that it is by God’s grace that God loves us, and not by our own doing.
This love from God can make us feel special. And, special we are, but unique, we are not. This is, perhaps, the third incomprehensible aspect of God’s love. This same love, no less and no more, is for ALL. This same unfailing and everlasting love of God is for us, our family, our friends, our classmates, our colleagues, our neighbors, the person who wins an award they were hoping to win, the person who cuts in front of us on the toll way, the people we don’t know, and, yes, even those we may consider to be our enemies.
So, in this month with so many reminders about L-O-V-E, give some thought to the unfailing and everlasting love of God. Look in the mirror and tell yourself how special you are and how much God loves you. Then, tell another person just how special they are and how much God loves them. Finally, look at someone that you might never give another thought about, and remind yourself just how special they are too, and how much God loves them.
A prayer focus for this month:
God of love, we are amazed and rejoice at your unfailing and everlasting love. Remind us that even when human love fails, you are there loving each and every person in this world.
Listen … God is Calling …
